The Adventure of Dandelion and iPad

Lil' G: Mom, let's go somewhere that we never went before!

On a random Thursday in January, the day before a predicted snowpacalypse, we were in a shopping plaza getting some lunch, and this is what he says to me. At 4 years old, he's already been to so many places most people have never been. No pressure or anything.

Since we were in a shopping center, I tried to think of which one of the stores around there that we haven't been to yet. But we always go shopping. No, I had to come up with something different, and I had to do it quick because he was getting antsy. Being cooped up in the winter in Minnesota is starting to get to us.

Luckily for us, I remembered someplace that could be fun close by- in the next shopping center over. A little place called Color Me Mine. It's one of those paint-your-own-pottery places. If you've never been to one, you should try it.

The pieces to paint are a *little* expensive, especially considering that your 4 year old will almost certainly break whatever it is he decides to paint. After looking at nearly every piece in the place, we found a bag on a bottom shelf holding not one, but 2 plaster trolls! So, we both got to paint one.

Lil' G is still pretty interested in how colorful he can make the water when he changes colors on the brush. But this time, he also had fun mixing colors on the ceramic palette. There was a little brush painting and a little finger painting. And a nice little mess that Mom didn't have to clean up.

As we painted, I tried to explain to him that the colors that he was painting would actually be different than what comes out of the kiln after being fired. But, only actually seeing the results of something you've done can properly explain that to you.

So, we painted and marked our names on the bottoms and left them behind to be fired. We were told that it could take up to 10 days, so I marked on my calendar when to expect the call. I was pleasantly surprised when, the following Monday afternoon, I received a text saying that our trolls were ready to be picked up.

The next day, we went to get our creations. We opened them up at the store, because Lil' G was so excited to see them. Mine was on top and got a big "Wow!" from both of us. Then we unwrapped G's. "Whoa!" he said, but seemed a little disappointed. I told him I love it and reminded him that we had such fun actually making them. He perked up and said he wants to come back and paint a camper van next time.

On the way home, I asked what we should name them. He contemplated it for the rest of the day. The next morning, when he saw them sitting on the table again, he asked me what I was naming mine. I told him mine is named Dandelion. I asked him if he decided on a name for his and he said, "Yeah. His name is iPad."
